MBCT is an evidence based eight-week program for prevention of relapse for those who have had depression or anxiety and are well now.
This eight week course will help you to :
- understand habitual patterns of the mind and choose another way of being
- notice depressive cycles before they occur
- engage with your mind and life with greater intimacy and kindness.
The course is facilitated by Sandy Dias Andrade, internationally certified as an MBCT Teacher through the Center for Mindfulness, University of California, San Diego.
MBCT is emerging as one of the fastest growing mindfulness based interventions. It is based on the Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) eight week program, developed by Jon Kabat Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.
Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale adapted the MBSR program to especially support people who had suffered from repeated bouts of depression in their lives.
MBCT combines mindfulness meditations and aspects of cognitive therapy. Participants learn to apply the insights from the practice to their daily lives. It is more than a relapse prevention program. It is a whole new way of being! It involves a particular way of inquiry into experience that a trained facilitator holds space for.
It is particularly useful to those who have had depression and/or anxiety. It has been found applicable to other clinical conditions as well.
The UK National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) has endorsed MBCT as an effective treatment for prevention of relapse. Research has shown participants develop improved efficacy in recognizing habitual patterns of mind.
The group comes together once a week for 2 hours over 8 weeks. During the class participants learn the practice of mindfulness meditation and its application to depression and anxiety.
There is supplemented by home practice in between sessions to deepen the learning.
It also includes psychoeducation and aspects from cognitive therapy that shows the link between thinking and feeling, and how best the participants can look after themselves when depression cycles begin.
MBCT groups run both in-person at the center in Pune and online. This year the program will happen online.
